Tipping in the UK
Tipping customs in the UK are less formalised than in the United States, but it is generally expected in restaurants, hotels, taxis, and some other service industries. The standard tip in a UK restaurant is 10–15% for good service, rising to 20% for exceptional service.
Many UK restaurants now add a discretionary service charge of 12.5% to the bill automatically. You are legally entitled to remove this charge if you are unhappy with the service — simply ask the staff before paying. If a service charge is already included, there is no obligation to tip further.
Since October 2024, new UK legislation requires employers to pass 100% of tips and service charges directly to workers, without deductions. This means your tip now goes entirely to the staff rather than being retained by the business.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip in a UK restaurant?
10–15% is standard for good service. 20% is generous for excellent service. If a service charge is already included on the bill, you are not expected to tip additionally.
Should I tip in cash or add it to the card payment?
Cash tips are generally preferred by staff as they receive them directly. Card tips may go through the employer's payroll system, though new 2024 legislation ensures workers receive 100% of tips.
Do I have to pay a service charge?
No. A discretionary service charge in the UK is optional. You can ask for it to be removed if you are unhappy with the service. A mandatory service charge is rare and must be clearly stated.
Should I tip in other service industries?
Tipping is common for taxi drivers (round up to nearest pound), hotel porters (£1–£2 per bag), hairdressers (10%), and food delivery drivers (£1–£2). It is less common in pubs and fast food.
